A 235acre venue on the west side of the creek, Hagley became a nonprofit library and museum open to the public in 1972. The site includes restored mills, a workers' community, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. Less than a mile downstream from Hagley, Breck's Mill was built in the 1810s as a cottonspinning mill.

From 1802 to 1921, Eleutherian Mills was a gunpowder mill site used for the manufacture of explosives founded by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, which grew into the DuPont company.
